How to group a sample according to the mean and standard deviation

My research is not about statistics but my tutor told me I need to group my evaluated results in blocks using the standard deviation and the mean. I asked him the details but he's taking a lot of time to respond.





I have 30 values and I need to group them in n blocks (let's say 3), and I believe they need to have equal interval size.
So how do I create this blocks or groups?



I'm pretty sure this must be a standard procedure, but I can't find it online. I don't know what it is called.





Here are my sample results and my temporary solution:



Values:
0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0.18, 1.48, 1.7, 1.85, 2.43, 2.43, 2.46, 2.46, 2.48, 2.49, 2.52, 2.65, 2.65, 3.68, 3.71, 3.71, 3.77, 3.78, 3.79, 3.79, 7.37, 7.41, 7.47



Mean: 2.542
Deviation: 2.1549



My current idea was to make a big block with the following range:



[Mean-Deviation, Mean+Deviation] = [0.3871, 4.6969]



And the size of each block could be the division of that range between n(3):



blockSize = (4.6969-0.3871)/3 = 1.4366



So I would have 3 blocks: [0.3871, 1.8237), [1.8237, 3.2603), [3.2603, 4.6969], but all the values would not fit into them. Some of them would be left out. Does this make any sense?



Here are the block groups in an image





Those values could be left out cause they deviate from the norm I guess. But honestly I'm not good at this subject. Please help. I assume I must include all the values in the blocks.



So how do I create the block groups? what's the formula for this?
