Besides surgery theory, are there other techniques that can be used to effectively remove an open set of a manifold (without boundary) and sew another manifold (without boundary) into the original manifold? In addition, if the original manifold is compact and the manifold to be sown in is non-compact, is it possible that the resulting space will be compact?
